Frequently Asked Questions

Is HapVideo really free?

Yes. HapVideo is completely free to use with no hidden costs. There are no usage limits, no watermarks on your output, and no premium tiers. You can convert as many videos as you want, whenever you want.

Where do my videos go? Are they uploaded anywhere?

Your videos never leave your device. HapVideo uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, which runs entirely inside your browser. No data is ever sent to any server — not the original file, not the converted result. This means maximum privacy and security.

What formats can I convert between?

HapVideo supports six output formats: MP4 (H.264 video + AAC audio), WebM (VP9 video + Vorbis audio), MOV (QuickTime container), MKV (Matroska container), AVI, and animated GIF. You can upload any of these formats and convert to any other.

How does the quality slider work?

The quality slider controls the CRF (Constant Rate Factor) used during encoding. Sliding toward 'Best quality' uses a lower CRF value — this preserves more detail but produces a larger file. Sliding toward 'Smallest file' uses a higher CRF — the file will be much smaller but may show some compression artifacts. The default 'Good balance' setting works well for most use cases.

Can I resize my video?

Yes. HapVideo offers resolution presets: keep the original size, or scale down to 1080p, 720p, 480p, or 360p. The video maintains its original aspect ratio — HapVideo automatically adds padding if needed so nothing is stretched or cropped.

What is the largest file I can convert?

HapVideo supports files up to 2 GB. Because processing runs locally in your browser, actual performance depends on your device — files over 500 MB may be slow on phones or tablets. For best results with large videos, use a desktop browser with at least 4 GB of available RAM.

Which browsers are supported?

HapVideo works in all modern browsers that support WebAssembly: Chrome 57+, Firefox 52+, Safari 15+, and Edge 79+. For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of Chrome or Firefox on desktop.
